Don't end up like Terri Schiavo! Put together a durable power of attorney for yourself. If you live in GA I will post a link to the form you can fill out and sign. If not just google durable power of attorney with your state name and you can find it for free with a little looking.
Also I have heard in the news about filling out a living will, but apparently that can be a bad idea. In a living will you fill out specific things about your health care and how you want them handled, however 20 years in the future this can become a problem if you didn't talk about a specific problem or treatment that didn't exist when you write a living will.
A durable power of attorney just gives a person of your choosing to make medical decisions for you in the event you can't make them yourself. It's a very simple form, everyone should have one.

Here's a longer form in Word format:

I've decided to start blogging again, for whatever reason. I have been really disturbed by the Terri Schiavo case that's been all over the news for the past week. I just have a problem with this poor woman being kept alive for so many years when her husband requested years ago for her life support to be stopped. I feel for the family and Ms. Schiavo, but it's my personal opinion that no one would want to be kept alive for that long if they had a choice, or for their condition to tear their family apart. I felt so strongly about this that i decided to write my Congressmen for the first time in my life. Here's a copy of what I wrote:
"As a conservative Republican who recently voted for you, I wanted to write you and let you know how unhappy myself and my wife are with Congress' decision to stop the court order in Florida involving Terri Schiavo. First of all the husband has a right to determine his wife's fate, especially in these circumstances where she has been on life support for over ten years. Secondly, it's not the job of Congress to enforce the laws of a particular state or county. The courts have already done their jobs in over a dozen court cases involving this case, and Congress needs to let their decisions stand. The Congress' recent interference is a fundamental abuse of the power of the legislative branch. Please don't support any measures to interfere with the supreme courts decisions, it does nothing but to weaken our time-honored systems of government and law. I hope as well that Congress has more important things to spend time and taxpayer dollars on than this one issue. It has been addressed well enough from the courts. Your constituents are very concerned about Social Security and Iraq at the moment: lets work to fix these issues and others that matter to all of the people of your state and your country. "
Maybe someone read it, probably not. I did get a canned response from one of GA's senators who talked about Ms. Schiavo's right to due process. Give me a break. Anyway feel free to post comments if you agree or don't.

The outcome of Washington Redskins football games has correctly predicted the winner of every U.S. presidential election since 1936.
The Redskins have proved to be a time-tested election predictor. In the previous 15 elections, if the Skins have lost their last home game prior to the election, the incumbent party has lost the White House. When they have won, the incumbent has stayed in power.
This election year, that deciding game takes place on Sunday, October 31 ... vs. Green Bay.
